Background

Heat mitigation strategies cool the built environment through measures like reflective and green roofs, pervious surfaces, street tree planting, and climate-smart urban design.

Associated Activities

What's left to do?

2035
Use the Development Code to require and incentivize green building elements such as reflective roofs, eco-roofs, solar panels, permeable pavement, and rainwater collection systems. Provide incentives to retrofit existing buildings with similar features.
This is a potential activity.
2035
Increase shade in high heat-prone areas with trees or mechanical shade. Prioritize shading in public walkways near businesses, public leisure areas, and public parks.
This is a potential activity.
2035
Require vacant and bare lots be vegetated to foster urban biodiversity and reduce the impact of urban heat island impacts.
This is a potential activity.
2035
Other activities and opportunities as they arise.
The actions above in "What's left to do" are not a comprehensive list and will grow and evolve as we pursue this strategy.
